This page is intended to keep everyone up to date on the progress on the sale of six of our care homes.
A plan to move six of the Council's residential care homes into private ownership will unlock at least £9.4million in investment in care for older people in Nottinghamshire over the next five years.
The proposal, which was approved at the Full Council meeting on 22 September, is for Runwood Homes to buy six of the 12 residential care homes currently owned by the Council for £2.5million. The sale could be completed in January 2012.
Councillor Kay Cutts, Leader of the Council, said: "We are delighted with this deal. Runwood Homes have pledged to invest £3million in the homes, which shows their commitment to running them in the long term. We are selling the homes to a company with a proven track record in caring.
"Some parties have criticised us about the amount of money the homes are being sold for. However, it's not about money – it's about people. This is about getting the best deal for residents and staff."
Residents will be unaffected
Residents at the transferred homes would be completely unaffected by the proposals. All six homes would remain as care homes, keep existing fees for current residents and maintain the existing staff group to ensure continuity of care for residents. Runwood Homes has also pledged to invest £3million in the homes over the next five years to improve standards.
Investing in the future
The money received from the sale will be put towards capital projects, including investment in new extra care facilities and day care services for older people.
The money the Council saves in running costs (approximately £4.5million over five years) will be ploughed back into frontline care services to support and enable more older people to live in their own homes for as long as possible.
Other homes unaffected
Under the proposals, the six remaining Council care homes will continue to operate as residential care homes, as well as providing short term and respite care services to support carers. There will be no change for the existing residents.
