What can I get done?

All jobs must either reduce the risk of a fall or help you remain living independently in your home.

Adaptations

We can carry out essential minor adaptations that help you move around your home and stay steady on your feet. These include:

  • grab rails
  • second stair rails
  • half-steps
  • exterior hand rails.

'Handy person' jobs

These are small practical jobs that help you stay living safely at home. These include:

  • fixing curtain rails
  • fitting door and window locks
  • putting up shelves
  • fixing tripping hazards such as loose carpets.

How much does the work cost?

Adaptations

The basic charge for adaptation work is £15. You can have up to £250 worth of adaptations supplied and fitted in a single job.

Handy person jobs

The basic charge for handy person jobs is £15. You need to supply all materials for the job. If you have difficulty getting what's needed you may be able to arrange to give money to the person doing the work so they can buy the materials for you.

All charges and limits are subject to change, so please check when requesting a job to confirm the price.

Who carries out the work?

The work is carried out by professional traders from our “Buy with Confidence” register. They have all been approved by Trading Standards and will provide:

  • high quality workmanship
  • a clean, tidy and courteous service.

How long does it take to get the work done?

Internal jobs are usually completed within five working days.

External work, including hand rails, are usually completed within nine working days.

Hospital discharge

We will usually complete work within two working days if:

  • the work needs to be done so you can be discharged from hospital or
  • it is needed during the first fourteen days following discharge from hospital.

Is there a limit to what I can have done?

There are a few restrictions:

  • requests for adaptations where the materials cost over £250 will be referred to our Occupational Therapy team. They will contact you to look at your needs in more detail
  • if you rent from a council or housing association they are responsible for any adaptations. Contact the people you rent your house from for more information
  • if you rent from a private landlord we need written permission from them before we begin
  • the service does not extend to gardening, decorating or any job that requires a specialist trader (such as an electrician, plumber or gas fitter)
  • handyperson jobs are limited to four hours of work
  • HPAS can only be used once in any three month period unless you need extra adaptations.
