Walking in Nottinghamshire

Rights of way

If you want to explore Nottinghamshire's countryside, you need to know where you're allowed to walk, cycle, and ride a horse.

A right of way is a public path. Anyone may 'pass or re-pass' along a right of way, at any time. Find out about rights of way in Nottinghamshire.

Where to walk

If you want to go for a walk in Nottinghamshire, you have plenty of options:

Find a walking route

We have an online forum called RouteXchange where you can browse walking routes suggested by other walkers. You can also add your own routes to share them with others.

Long distance routes

There are two long distance walks in Nottinghamshire, and they are both shown on Ordnance Survey Explorer maps.

Trent Valley Way

A guide to the Trent Valley Way, costing £5, can be bought at Retford, Newark, Southwell and Worksop libraries.

Robin Hood Way

Visit the Robin Hood Way website to find out about this route.

Accessible walks

Guides to walks accessible to all can be downloaded from the Greenwood Community Forest website. You can also contact us to request copies.

The publications use a system of mapping that identifies the location of any gates along the route and their width suitability for wheelchairs, as well as rating the steepness of gradients and describing the type of surface.

The surfaced towpaths alongside the Grantham Canal, Chesterfield Canal and Nottingham Canal (part of the Erewash Valley Trail) are also accessible to many different users.

Encountering problems

If you have come across a problem while out on a walk you can report this online:
