Would you be interested in volunteering for Nottinghamshire Archives?

The Nottinghamshire Archives' online catalogue (NAWCAT) currently holds over 71,000 catalogue entries but this only represents a small percentage of the catalogues of our total holdings. We still have  years worth of catalogues to add to it and this is where you can help!

We are looking for volunteers for two projects.

Retro-conversion of catalogues

Volunteers are required to input our earlier catalogues onto Microsoft Excel databases which can then be transferred onto NAWCAT. Training on entering data will be given.

Data-entering of bishop’s transcripts catalogues

Between 2005 and 2010, a group of volunteers listed all the bishop’s transcripts (contemporary copies of the parish registers).

The resultant catalogue for the earliest series, from c1600 to 1815, needs entering onto Microsoft Excel so that it can be transferred onto NAWCAT. The later series have already been entered and can be viewed online under the references DR/1/6 for the years 1813 to 1835 and DR/1/7 for 1836 to 1902.

Getting started

We are looking for people to work at home or in their local library. You don’t even have to live locally! We will happily post to you the necessary paper catalogues for you to take part.

If you have an interest in history or want to update your IT skills this may be the volunteer project for you.

Work experience

School pupils and university students (including those undertaking courses before an archives postgraduate course) are welcome to approach us to discuss the possibilities of undertaking work experience at Nottinghamshire Archives. Demand is considerable so it is advisable to contact us well in advance.

The work experience we provide is generally over a one week period.

The week begins with an introduction to the service and tour of the building, then continues with a combination of project work and professional modules on a range of themes, including accessions and cataloguing, conservation work, records management, web site work and outreach.

For both work experience and voluntary work, please e-mail: archives@nottscc.gov.uk.
