The Council’s Instrumental and Music Teaching scheme offers schools in Nottinghamshire a range of services.
Whole class instrument and singing lessons
Whole class instrumental and vocal lessons are available and becoming extremely popular around the county. The idea is to give as many primary school children as possible a free introduction to trying an instrument. There are various instrument packages available depending on the age of the class taking part.
The weekly lessons are fun and practical, building on pupils’ musical skills. Each child has their own instrument and they are taught as a whole class. No practise is expected. Participating schools have seen improvements in pupil behaviour and attendance.
A fee is charged for this service, and large discounts are available for schools that sign up for a full year. Participating schools get free access to NASS online, which is a website containing a wide range of interactive learning materials. Lessons and activities can also be loaded onto schools’ Virtual Learning Environment.

Performance opportunities
If you think pupils in your school would enjoy the experience of performing in a band, choir or orchestra, we can help. We can provide teachers, and we can also arrange for schools to have the opportunity to perform alongside professional musicians in some impressive venues – such as the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham and the Everyday Champions Centre in Newark.
Details of opportunities will be emailed to your school office throughout the year.
Workshops and projects
A lively, hands-on workshop is a great way to help children learn about music. We can deliver workshops in schools and for younger children (in Early Years settings), and can tailor sessions to fit specific topics or exam syllabi. Our expertise also extends to teaching children to use recording studios and associated software.
For secondary schools, we run curriculum projects based around Musical Futures. Projects are designed with input from your school’s music department, and aim to re-engage pupils, helping them develop their practical skills whilst broadening their knowledge. We’re working with local businesses and higher education establishments so that we can offer a variety of experiences and venues, including preparing young people for music industry jobs.
Curriculum projects are not just for pupils: by working alongside our instrument teachers, your school’s teachers will benefit from professional development, and all parties will be able to share their skills and expertise.
To arrange a workshop in your school, please contact the Workshop and Performance Coordinator on tel: 0115 977 3287 or email: imt@nottscc.gov.uk.
We also run a programme of workshops around Nottinghamshire – details will be sent to your school throughout the year.
Sing Up
Sing Up is a national campaign to get singing back into schools.
Registration is free, and entitles your school to access a wealth of singing materials, covering all areas of the curriculum from Early Years to Key Stage 3. There is also a free magazine, which includes case studies and lesson plans.
You can register on the Sing Up website at www.singup.org. If you’d like to speak to us about the scheme, get in touch with the Vocal Coordinator on tel: 0115 977 3287 or email: imt@nottscc.gov.uk. We’re able to offer advice, support and training for both staff and parents in how to use the Sing Up website. The Sing Up scheme offers awards, and we can help your school to apply for them – there are already two Nottinghamshire schools that have won platinum awards.
Staff training
Tailored packages are available for staff training. The packages cover our whole class instrument teaching, building general music skills, and helping with team building. They also cover the Sing Up and NASS websites.
If you’d like us to come to your school and work with your staff, please contact us on tel: 0115 977 3287 or email: imt@nottscc.gov.uk.
