Musical instruments

Music and singing lessons

Children in Nottinghamshire can access music and singing lessons through their primary and secondary schools, as part of the Council’s Instrumental and Music Teaching scheme.

If your child is having music lessons in school through the Council’s Instrumental and Music Teaching scheme, you can buy or loan a musical instrument from the Council for them to use.

To loan

We have a great range of good quality instruments available for pupils to hire. Loaning an instrument is a good idea if your child is new to music lessons, as it saves you the expense of buying them an instrument before you’re certain they will enjoy it.

You can loan any instrument for £36 per year, payable to your school (usually on a termly basis). This charge also covers wear and tear – but does not cover deliberate or accidental damage, or lost instruments. Accessories, such as reeds or strings, are not included. If an instrument loaned from us is in need of repair or replacement, your child’s music teacher will be able to arrange for it to be collected from the school (usually within two weeks). Instruments that have been damaged (either deliberately or accidentally), lost or stolen will be charged for – and a replacement will only be issued once the payment has cleared.

Speak to your child’s school to arrange the loan of an instrument.

To buy

New instruments can be bought through the Council at a discounted rate, through our Instrument Purchase Scheme. Instruments bought in this way are free from VAT as well, so a good saving can be made - download a price list:

The Instrument Purchase Scheme is open to children who are having music lessons through the Council's Instrumental Music Teaching scheme.

The scheme provides a one year warranty, which means that if an instrument needs repairing or replacing in that time, we can arrange this for you.

To arrange to buy an instrument, speak to your child’s music teacher. Once you have discussed with them which instrument you would like to buy, call our customer service centre on 08449 80 80 80 where we will be able to take your order and payment.
