Step up to social work

Join our innovative Step Up to Social Work training programme and you’ll get a Masters in Social Work, as well as intensive hands-on experience. We can train you in as little as 18 months, and you’ll benefit from around £15,000 per annum to support you.

Social work with children and families is a challenging but rewarding way to make a real difference in people’s lives.

We’re looking for educated people, who have experience of working with children, young people and families who can also demonstrate their maturity and emotional resilience.

Step Up to Social Work is a tailored training programme which will provide you with a masters in social work, alongside intensive hands on experience. It has been specifically designed as a new way for career changers to train to become qualified social workers.

The programme offers a more flexible route into the social work profession because it allows for individually tailored training, while relevant qualifications and experience may count towards your learning.

Do you have what it takes?

You’re eligible if you can demonstrate:

  • A 1st or 2:1 degree in any discipline.
  • Grade C or above GCSE in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Experience of working with children, young people and families.
  • Emotional resilience and maturity.

Katrina's story

"The course has been really intense and there is a high volume of work. But it's been valuable being able to work alongside social workers in this way."

Katrina Hemsley-Mclauchlan is urging others to get hands on experience after completing her first social care placement.
