A-Z of how to recycle or dispose of your household waste
There are a whole host of items that can be recyled or disposed of at our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC's). In many cases small amounts can be recycled by the collections from your home or at local recycling banks.
There are also some items that cannot be taken to the HWRC, but needs specialist disposal, such as asbestos.
| Aerosol Cans | All HWRC's, and empty aerosol cans can be put in your household recycling bin | Never puncture, burn or crush aerosol cans because they can explode and the gases can damage the environment. |
| Animal waste | In your waste wheelie bin. It is not accepted at HWRCs. | Animal waste can be put in your wheelie bin. If there is insufficient room, the animal waste should take precedence over other household waste, which can be taken to the HWRC.

| Asbestos | Asbestos is not accepted at HWRCs, however NCC provide a service where residents can dispose of asbestos from their home/garden for a fee of 40.00 pounds. | Ash | In your waste wheelie bin. | If you have a coal fire rake through it properly to make sure that the coal is burnt. Coal naturally contains sulphur and therefore will make soil acidic, so any ash that remains should not be put straight onto soil or into a compost bin. | Bathroom Suites | Any of our HWRC's
| If your bathroom is installed by a builder they are legally responsible for
disposing of the old bathroom suite and the cost of this disposal should be
included in the price of the work. If you install a new bathroom yourself then
you can take your old bathroom suite to one of the HWRC's

| Batteries | All of our HWRC's
| Used batteries, old rechargeable batteries and car batteries can all be recycled
|
| Bedding and Blankets | Charity shops are often grateful of donations of clean items such as sheets and
blankets. Clean sheets can also be placed in textile recycling banks inside a
plastic bag. | No restrictions at HWRC's. Charity shops may not always take duvets and pillows

| An old metal boiler from your home can be put in the metal recycling container, or alternatively a scrap

You could donate unwanted books that are in good condition to libraries, charity shops or second hand bookshops.
Second hand books for children can be given to local playgroups or schools. You can also use a book recycling bank if you have one in your area.
