Disabled parking (Blue Badges)

The Blue Badge Scheme provides a range of parking concessions for people with severe mobility problems.

Who is eligible for a Blue Badge?

  • People on certain benefits or who are registered blind are automatically eligible for a badge.
  • Other disabled people may be eligible for a badge but it will depend on the results of a mobility assessment.
  • Children under 3 may be eligible depending on certain conditions.
  • Organisations caring for disabled people meeting the eligibility criteria may be able to get a badge, but this is entirely at our discretion.

For full details of eligibility see the application form.

Blue Badges are issued to individual people not vehicles. This means you can use a Blue Badge both as a driver and a passenger. You can also transfer your Blue Badge to whichever vehicle you are using for a particular journey.

How do I apply for a badge?

  • Online – complete the form at www.direct.gov.uk/bluebadge
  • Telephone 08449 80 80 80. One of our service advisors will send an application form to you.
Opening hours 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 12 noon on Saturdays.
  • In person – visit one of our Customer Service Points where staff will give you an application form to complete.

What happens when I apply?

Your application will be considered by the local Blue Badge Team.

If you are eligible:

  • you will have to pay a £2 fee before the badge can be issued
  • the badge will be sent to you by second class post within 7 working days of us receiving all the required documents, photographs and payment from you.

If we ask for a mobility assessment we will make an appointment with you to see an independent health professional who will do the assessment.

If you are not eligible for a badge, we will write to you giving the reason.

Changes to the Blue Badge Scheme January 2012

Existing badge holders will notice some changes to the Blue Badge Scheme from 1 January 2012.

The main changes are:

  • Applying for a badge is now done using an online application form. If you have problems doing this please telephone 08449 80 80 80 or visit one of our Customer Service Points.
  • New badges have both a ‘valid from’ date and an expiry date. Badges must not be used outside of these dates.
  • The design has changed to look like a large credit card. It comes in a plastic folder along with an integrated timer/clock.

Old badges are still valid until they expire.

It is the badge holders responsibility to apply for a new badge before their current one runs out.

For more information about the changes see the Department for Transport website www2.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/access/bluebadge/reform/index.html
